TL;DR: The stove itself is usually under half the total. The rest is flue, hearth, any building work and certification, which is why two quotes for the same stove can look very different. Get it surveyed and quoted in writing.
What you're actually paying for
- The stove. Ranges from entry-level to premium designer brands. We stock HWAM, Wiking, Stovax, Chesneys, Dean Forge, Mendip and Penman Collection.
- The flue. If you have an existing chimney in good condition, a flue liner is normally all you need. If there's no chimney, you'll need a twin-wall insulated flue system, more labour, more materials.
- The hearth. Most installs need a non-combustible hearth to meet building regulations. Granite, slate or limestone: your choice.
- Building work. Enlarging a fireplace opening, forming a beam, plastering, making good. Varies enormously by property.
- HETAS certification. Included in every install we do. Your insurance and your building regs sign-off both depend on it.
Why Ecodesign stoves are worth it
Modern Ecodesign-ready stoves exceed 80% efficiency and reduce particulate emissions by as much as 75% compared to older models. That efficiency translates directly into lower running costs, typically around a third of the cost of electric heating, and estimated at around 13% less than gas (source: industry data; actual savings depend on your property and fuel costs).
Why HETAS costs a little more, and why it's worth it
A HETAS registered installer can give you the certificate and paperwork a buyer's solicitor may ask for when you sell. Check with your insurer what they need.
